About
Hello, I'm Matthew Mason.
Freelance filmmaker and cameraman, based in Northern Ireland and working across Ireland, the UK and wherever else the job is.
I started out making short films with borrowed kit and never really stopped. What pulled me in was the interviews. There is a moment where somebody finally works out how to say the thing they came to say, and I have never got tired of being in the room for it. That is still the work I take when I can get it, whether the person in the chair is a poet or a centre back.
The work splits fairly evenly between documentary and branded films. On the arts side I've shot for Verbal and The Honest Ulsterman. I spent a season with MCS, most of it pitchside in the rain. Commercial jobs tend to come through agencies like Profile Tree, and occasionally something reaches further than that, as far as Lycra. Day to day it is mostly interviews and multi-camera events, plus whatever needs cutting vertical afterwards.
I do the prep so the shoot day stays calm. I'll know the location before I arrive and turn up early. I light fast, because nobody does their best talking while they sit under a lamp losing their nerve. Contributors get looked after. What a client gets is a day that runs to time, and rushes that come back labelled and backed up twice, ready for whoever is cutting them.
